Headphone types [learn how to choose the ideal model]

Check out what are the types of headphones, their main features and find out which one best suits your style

There are several types of headphones , each with a specific design and particularity: there are the small and portable, the large and the high quality, the ones that more or less isolate the ambient sounds and offer very different experiences.

Here, you can check which type of headset is the most suitable for your taste.

What are the types of headphones?

Regardless of the brand or sound quality, the headphones fall into four basic categories. Let’s get to know each one of them:

1. Earphones

They are the simplest type, which usually accompanies cell phones and audio devices. They are small, light and fit reasonably in the ears, but do not isolate the sound. Therefore, they allow it to leak and the user to hear ambient sounds along with the music. They are the most suitable for those looking for practicality without spending a lot.

2. In-ear headphones

Also called “in-ear” (inside the ear), these are the headphones that come with those erasers of various sizes, so that they are directly fitted into the ear canal. They are also small and light, but their design allows the sound to be better isolated and does not leak, also eliminating external noise. Because it is used inside the channels, it can bother some users and are not very suitable for use on the street, since you will not hear the sounds that surround you when walking.

3. In-ear headphones

The over-the-ear or “on-ear” headphones are those with a larger size, usually fixed with a bow and which are positioned over the ears, but do not cover them completely. Because of this, these headphones do not isolate the sound, but are less fragile than the earphones and in-ear headphones. The sound quality tends to be better than the first two and approach the next one on the list: the circumaural ones.

4. Circumaural headphones

For a long time, the synonym for “headphone” was circumaural headphones, also called “over-ear” (around the ear). These headphones completely cover the ears and isolate the sound completely, offering a better sound experience, even because it has bigger and better components. As negative points, these headphones are quite large and complicated to carry, besides being generally the most expensive.
